Bimini weather

The forecast numbers, the marine forecast and the latest readings near Bimini, from the National Weather Service, the National Hurricane Center and three nearby weather stations, with the sea-surface temperature from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Each block shows when its source issued it and when this site last pulled it.

Please note: BiminiIslands.com is a privately owned visitor information site. It is not affiliated with the Government of The Bahamas, the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism, Resorts World Bimini, or any ferry operator, airline, cruise line or marina, and it is not a NOAA or National Weather Service product.

The official forecast

The Bahamas Department of Meteorology issues the official forecast for Bimini. Its Bahamas Marine Forecast and Bahamas Public Forecast are posted on met.gov.bs. For tropical storms and hurricanes, the Department posts its own storm and severe-weather messages there too, and the National Hurricane Center publishes the advisories and forecast tracks. Both links sit beside every block on this page.

Forecast numbers

The National Weather Service forecasts on a grid of squares about 1.6 miles (2.5 km) across, and Bimini sits in cell 145,53 of the grid its Miami office runs. That cell falls in the Weather Service's marine zone AMZ671, whose full name is "Waters from Deerfield Beach to Ocean Reef FL from 20 to 60 NM excluding the territorial waters of Bahamas". The zone leaves Bahamian waters out by name. So the table is the Weather Service's grid output for the square over Bimini, and the official forecast for Bahamian waters is the Bahamas Department of Meteorology's.

Wind and gusts are in knots, wave height and swell in feet, wave period in seconds and air temperature in °F. The Weather Service's data service publishes the grid in metric units, and this site converts them. Wind and swell are given by the direction they come from. The table runs every three hours for the next two days, and the rest of the forecast sits under it, every six hours.

Marine forecast

The National Hurricane Center writes an offshore waters forecast for the southwest North Atlantic, the Bahamas included, and splits it into zones. Bimini is in zone AMZ075, "Northern Bahamas from 24N to 27N". The block shows that zone's part of the forecast exactly as the Hurricane Center issued it, line for line, with the product's own note on how it gives the height of the seas.

Its seas and the table's wave height above can differ. The table is the Weather Service's grid value for the one square over Bimini, and this forecast covers its whole zone, from 24N to 27N, open Atlantic waters included.

more than twice the significant wave height.

Nearest station readings

No station in NOAA's National Data Buoy Center network sits at Bimini, so the page shows three nearby ones from it: NOAA's station at Settlement Point on Grand Bahama, the network's nearest in The Bahamas, and the two nearest on the Florida side that report. Those are a wave buoy off Hollywood Beach, run by the Coastal Data Information Program at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, and NOAA's station at Virginia Key. Each tile gives its station's distance from Bimini, worked out from the positions in the network's station list.

The two Florida stations are on the far side of the Gulf Stream, so their wind, waves and water temperature are Florida-side readings. A reading a station didn't send shows as "No reading".

Water temperature

The sea-surface temperature comes from MUR, a daily analysis that NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory merges from several sensors at a resolution of about a kilometer, served through NOAA CoastWatch. It runs a day behind, so the figure is for the day before, and JPL usually revises the most recent seven days each day. The figure shown is for the analysis cell nearest Bimini, and it's a foundation temperature: the water below the top layer that the sun warms by day, much like a pre-dawn reading 3 to 16 feet (1 to 5 m) down. On a sunny afternoon with little wind, the very top of the water can run warmer.

How the blocks stay current

This site pulls each source on a schedule and keeps the last copy that passed its checks. When a source stops answering, its block carries on with that copy until the copy reaches its age limit. Then the block drops off the page, and the link to its source stays in its place.
